Windows Vista - A Personal and Technical Perspective

Recently, my son and I received new notebook computers with Windows Vista preinstalled. As a technician as well as a gadget/technology freak, I will give both a personal and a technical view. First, the personal.

Vista is a "pretty" operating system but slow to start up. Many of my old applications are not compatible with it. One of my biggest disappointments was Starry Night Enthusiast 5. This just would not even begin to install. I am very disappointed that I have to purchase the new version due to an OS upgrade. Many other of my personal programs do not run on it either, such as Norton Utilities. Apparently, Symantec Corp. has elected to no longer offer compatible versions.
In short, my personal opinion is that Windows Vista is a "pig with lipstick!"

My professional opinion is: Wait until Service Pack 2 is released. Historically, MS has worked out original bugs with SP1 releases but only creates more that are usually corrected with SP2. Boot time has more than doubled, compatibility issues as well as some networking anomalies. Other concerns are mis-reporting issues such as network connection. Even though I have an Internet connection, the tray icon shows either no connection or limited connectivity. System Restore does not work either. My company will NOT be migrating to Vista in the near future.
So, if you are fine with XP, stay with it. Remember the old saying, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"? Well, this holds true here. XP may not be perfect by any means (when has MS actually done something right), but it's a far cry better than Vista.
